Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I do not agree with the involvement that Board has had in day to day operations at the Co-op. With my daily involvement with the brewery build out, I have a direct relationship with the employees and understand their concerns and needs.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I am heavily involved with the community and have put in many volunteer hours, not only helping to set up and keep the brewery operational, but also setting up and helping the GM run events.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
This is a member based business and we should focus on supporting and serving the Los Alamos community.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group):
I work daily with the Cooperative staff and have built a relationship with the front-of-house and brewery employees.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
I have a behind-the-scenes knowledge of the Cooperative, a great relationship with the current staff, and insight into the frustrations that the operational employees have with the Board's involvement.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
I can help the Board transition from being involved in Operations to what their role should be- Policy Oversight.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I would like to contribute a voice of patience and persistence to the organization. I would like to work on the acoustics both inside and out so that we can have bands play. Also would like to help negotiate the install of a sprinkler system to meet fire code.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
The understanding that everybody has talents that can benefit the organization.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
Within 3 years the bathtub should be able to meet the beer drinking needs of the community. Long term I think the Bathtub should strive to be debt free. Unless the members decide to purchase land and build a member owned brewery.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I have a participated on many high performance teams
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
Acoustic engineering,formerly a general contractor
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I am passionate about beer, and also about Los Alamos. I want to make "The Tub" a welcoming place to hang out with friends, a favored destination for visitors from out of town, and a beacon for beer aficionados from points beyond. I've been impressed with the acumen shown by other board members in their various strengths -- it was really a team effort to get this place going! Personally, however, I feel that my presence on the board lent it a legitimacy in the beer world. I added experience, knowledge and national connections in beer brewing and judging that was missing. Specifically, on the board I want to continue to accomplish these objectives: 1. Make the best beer we can make. 2. Incorporate suggestions from our members when possible. I have actively solicited opinions from patrons and emailed them on the spot to the board for future consideration. 3. Make the best business decisions for the BRBC to meet all of our financial objectives. 4. Develop a friendly atmosphere of collaboration and "one common purpose" for both the board and the membership. One of my sayings has been "beer makes friends", and I would strive to make that a reality.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I value good beer, good friends, and good music. No, that was too general. I value a cool tasty hefeweizen on a summer's afternoon in the shade of willow trees, listening to a local band with new and old friends, watching a five-year-old girl twirl in time to the music while her parents sit nearby. I value a late-night discussion of politics, philosophy and life with an old friend, while the winds threaten outside, and we sit by the fire, trading rounds of Fitz's Cherry Quad and bourbon-barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout. I value meeting after work to laugh too loud, commiserate over an IPA with co-workers, and catch the eye of the quiet girl in the corner. I value being loose in certain situations (e.g. giving daily operation responsibility to our GM and brewers) and precise at others (e.g. developing bylaws and governance policies that make sense and put the powers in the proper places). I value being careful with my money, and the money of others. I value making our members feel as if they are an owner of Bathtub Row -- because they are. I value co-operating with local businesses when we are able to (some examples: food service from the LA Market Co-op, beer dinners done jointly with a new restaurant, serving local wines and ciders). I value supporting the community, our extended family, by supporting events (some examples: bicycle races, local musicians, high school jazz performances, beer festivals). I don't think we have developed a set of values yet, but the above would be my suggestion for a first cut, if we decided we needed an explicit set.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
I am willing, of course, to discuss conflicting objectives among the board, but here are some ideas: 1. Develop some new tap rooms. I think a first choice should be White Rock, then maybe the Ski Hill. 2. Work out a better food solution. Maybe our own easily-prepared items, or perhaps some standard ordering procedure for nearby restaurants. 3. Develop a better outdoor solution to extend our capacity in colder weather. 4. Pay off all of our debt and start paying dividends to our members. 5. Increase our brewing capacity. 6. Continue beer pairing dinners, specialty brews, beer festivals, beer competition entries, partnering with local professional craft brewers and homebrewers.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
The most pertinent experience I have to list here is my service on this same LABC board from 8/2013-8/2015. I also attended many meetings as a member, both before and after I was officially on the board, starting in 3/2013 and continuing until now. I care about the success of this enterprise. One particular experience might be the hiring of our brewers. I was selected to be the chair of our Brewer Search Committee. I developed an advertisement for the position and posted it on several national lists and all of the brewing lists in New Mexico (aside: I started and continue to manage almost all of the brewing email lists in New Mexico, including lists for homebrew clubs in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces and El Paso, professional brewers, and a superset list for all NM brewers). I chose people for the Brewer Search Committee, including homebrewers, local beer enthusiasts, and people with hiring experience at the lab. With this group, I developed a set of criteria to rank the candidates. We then ranked the candidates and interviewed several, both in person and via Skype. One committee member and I talked with references and wrote up comments for the group. We reported back to the board, and eventually came to a decision on which people to hire. I am pleased with our choices, and the way that their complementary talents and pleasant demeanors have come together to produce great beer. In other board experience: - I was on the Board of Directors of the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) for 5 years, and served as president and vice president during my tenure. - I was on the Board of Advisors of the AHA (American Homebrewers Association) for 10 years. - I served on several BJCP style guide committees, including the one that rewrote the beer style guidelines in 2004, and the initial mead guideline committee in 1997. - I am the president of the local homebrewing club, the Atom Mashers.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
Besides my own personal financial dealings, my experience in business is mostly associated with the beer-related boards I have been on, mentioned above (LABC, BJCP, AHA). On the Los Alamos Beer Co-op (LABC) Board of Directors, we handled many business issues getting Bathtub Row going, and did so successfully. The Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) is the organization of beer judges worldwide, with over 5700 members. I took the reigns of the presidency during a particularly difficult time, as we wrested control of the treasury from the previous president who had been embezzling, and prosecuted him for his deeds (ask for the story some time!). The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) is currently an organization of 46,000 members. As a board member, I advised the organization on which paths to pursue, and which business decisions to make. I was privy to all of the financials of the organization, and on a few occasions I was their representative on the Association of Brewers board (now the Brewers Association) where I helped make decisions on the financials of the entire organization, which included the Great American Beer Festival, Brewers Publications (the publishing arm), the Institute of Brewers (the craft brewers arm), as well as the American Homebrewers Association.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
- I have written beer articles for Zymurgy (the magazine for homebrewing), Inside Mead and Southwest Brewing News. (ask for copies!) - I am a professional beer judge. As well as my homebrew competition experience, I have been a Great American Beer Festival judge since 2003 and a World Beer Cup judge since 2014. I have judged in over 66 competitions, and have sat on the Best of Show panel in over 40 competitions. - I have given every BJCP test in NM since 2004, six tests so far. - I have served as a "You Be The Judge" speaker at the GABF since 2008, and have given tasting tours there, including a tour done jointly with Michael Jackson. - I have taught homebrewing and beer tasting courses in Los Alamos. - I have been the organizer for two Critical Mash beer competitions in Los Alamos, the only BJCP-certified competitions ever done here. - I have connections to many of the "beer people" on the national scene, including both professional and home craft brewers.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I am a founding member of the Los Alamos Beer Co-op (#47), a home brewer, and active member of the Los Alamos Atom Mashers. I invested early because I believed in the goals of the Los Alamos Beer Co-op and I would be honored to do anything I can to help Bathtub Row achieve those goals.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I greatly agree that the success of a business should not be measured by its profit but by its benefit to the community. My value of community over profit is something that is reflected on a daily basis by my contributions to open-source software development.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
In the short/medium term I would like to see Bathtub Row further expand its presence in Los Alamos. This expanded presence should include beers on tap at Los Alamos restaurants and the Smith's Marketplace. Ideally, in the long term I would like to see Bathtub Row have a presence throughout the state. This can be achieved by purchasing a canning line and shipping throughout the state.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I have no current experience on a board or oversight committee. I still hope Bathtub Row members will give me the honor of serving on the board.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
I am a computer scientist by training. I would bring to the board an extended experience with technology and software development. I can use my background to help Bathtub Row better integrate with social media (Untappd) and the community. I am an experienced home brewer. I have been brewing regularly for the last 10 years. One of my latest endeavors won a silver medal at the Santa Fe Open competition in 2015.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I have been involved in helping with the coop before the brewing started. The Coop is still in its infancy and I would like to see it succeed. I feel this can only be achieved through hard work and sustainable business practices devoid of self-interests.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
The purpose of the board is to provide a background and financial structure for the brewing component to be run as a business. As the coop is still in the pearly stages of viability, ensuring that the day-to-day business operations are dealt with by the general manager, unencumbered by politics and committee management is a must.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
I would like to see Bathtub Brewing as a successful and stable business providing high quality beer and other services to the community.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I have been the President of the senate for The Associated Students of Idaho State University, which required leading and running meetings per Robert's rule of order. Working nag with the President of the University to have Student needs met, while compromising on things where there would be no winners or losers. Worked in Program office managing $18M of funding, 70 projects, and over 100 people across multiple divisions and directorates for 3 years. Left program with a steady growth of 10% per year in funds, while delivering quality deliverables on time and on schedule.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
I was raised in a family where my father managed a department store. I began working there at the age of six. At this time it meant he dealt with personnel issues, staffing, scheduling, ordering of merchandise, logistics, circular generation based upon seasonal buys and knowledge of customer base, marketing, and all the other pieces and parts of running a profitable business in good and bad economies. I I worked as a janitor, stock boy, repair man, sales person and other tasks as assigned at the store. I also successfully operated a paper route from the age of 12-18, lawn care business from 16-18. Both of these jobs required logistics, merchandise, money collection, and selling of services. I am in the process of setting up a scientific technical consulting firm for space applications that requires understanding contracting, conflict of interest designations and intellectual property protection.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
I have a keen understanding of civics, researching of legal matters, and an ability to present information to a committee for consideration. This is not unlike the proposal process and sales of projects to government program managers and program reviews. I believe in structured hard work and tenacity for getting things accomplished. It is not the purpose of the Board to make itself successful, but to setup the environment so that Bathtub Row brewing is successful.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I'd like to serve a second three year term as a BRBC board member. I believe that some continuity of board members is required for the business to successfully evolve. As member #11, I participated in many of the fund raising activities and participated in many of the decision making and startup activities that occurred to get the brewery established. My goal for a second term is to help ensure there is a successful transition from BRBC’s startup business phase to the next phase that meets the needs and expectations of the cooperative members and the BRBC staff.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I am very proud to have contributed to meeting initial goals of the Purpose and Mission Statement of the Los Alamos Beer Cooperative (LABC) which was to establish a brewery with a taproom (Bathtub Row Brewing Coop) in Los Alamos as a place for the community to gather and enjoy great, locally brewed beer. The Cooperative has supported and promoted the local craft beer community through its participation in the New Mexico Brewers Guild activities and made the following rallying cry true: “Make local beer in Los Alamos a reality!” During my involvement with establishing the “Tub” as a premier watering hole, I have met many people and made new friends that more than likely would not have happened otherwise.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
At a base level, my decision making process is guided in terms of how can BRBC sell more great craft beer but in a more efficient and cost effective capacity. My three year vision would be to work with all of the BRBC staff (brewers, GM, and bartenders) to see that BRBC has gained key operational efficiencies in both the front of the house sales and in the brewery. One way for this vision to be realized is to upgrade some brewing equipment and add additional capacity for brewing and serving. This vision has to be executed under the fiscal constraints of the moment. One long term goal I would like to see become a reality sometime in the future is for BRBC to open a satellite taproom in Whiterock (since I live there!).
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
Before my first term on the LABC board, I volunteered to chair the first committee for the LABC – called membership and marketing – the focus was fundraising and recruiting members for the coop. This involved planning and execution of the Movie Nights, the first Critical Mash Home brewers Contest and the tabling at the Ski Hill events. During my first 3 year term on the board, I participated on the finance committee, the brewer’s council, and I chaired the food trailer utilization committee.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
Management expertise--In my day job, I serve as a manager and team leader in a technical group at the laboratory. As a manager, I have to be a good listener and problem solver to help high energy, dedicated folks who like to get work done be productive as possible. I am also responsible for evaluating their performance. As a team leader, I have to manage $$$$ projects to deliver products on schedule and within budget in a highly regulated high hazard working environment. I feel these skills translate well to serving on the board. The GM, brewers, and staff are high energy folks that are dedicated to making BRBC successful. I try to make the time to get to know all the employees and solicit feedback from them (be a good listener) to see how the board can help all be more successful and productive. A brewery is considered a light industrial manufacturing facility. From my operations experience from my day job, I can make some suggestions (if asked) to help improve and assess the basic operational framework for safety and maintenance protocols.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
I am a home brewer – have been brewing for over 20 years. I am very interested in the science of zymurgy. Taking a typical home brewing recipe (5-10 gallon batch) and scaling it up to 7 barrels at elevation (7200 feet) to recreate the same recipe is a fascinating study for me. More beer = More friends!

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I am at a place in my career that I have taken on an advisory roll to several inventors and businesses. As a consultant I have much real world experience in several different fields and will be able to advice the younger business people on how to better run their business while at the same time looking out 3 to 5 years at other opportunities to grow into.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I believe in giving back to what has been give to me over the years. I value myself on being honest and having the drive to grow a business in some very creative ways. I love leading a team and getting their ideas out on the table to all can discuss.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
I believe this coop can create a bigger name for itself by specializing on a specific area. What that area may still be unknown but we would figure our where there are opening in the beer market through brainstorming where no idea is a bad idea. When we are confident as a team as to what we want to be and have a pretty good idea as how to get there, then we start the train rolling and we all enjoy the adventure together.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I am currently working with a small group, one being the inventor, on bringing a new saw to market in a very competitive market. Our product is higher priced than our competitors so we need to educate our distributors and customers a to everything our product can do. I have taken a leadership roll in this organization and we are well on our way to now getting retail space, many free editor reviews on the product and will soon start our brand building campaign.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
I have about 20 years experience in P & L's, I am very experienced in networking and have created my system as to how to contact those in your industry you need to get in front of when you do not know who they are. I think creatively and out of the box. I have been told I am very persistent on the sales side and convincing the distributor why they will sell my products and most of all I am a great team player. We must all work together to get a tough job done.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
I am a home brewer and love trying to make and tasting all sorts of different beers and spirits.

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I wish to assist in the transition of this entity from start-up to a viable long term establishment.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
The Co-op's seven values are a summation of many of my personal values. Being responsible and self-sufficient in what we can do is important as is teaming with others who can help in areas we are lacking. Supporting, participation and giving back to the community is what makes a community. Los Alamos is great in that this really happens here. We all can give in our own way, the community is one big Co-op.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
The Co-op should be on a firm fiscal footing in three years with most if not all outstanding obligations dealt with. Operations should be right sized for serving member needs first while allowing for a limited amount of production for other purposes (support of local events, etc.). Expansion of capabilities much beyond that over the next three years should be looked at with a critical eye. Longer term the foundations can be set for great expansion. It would be a great loss to see such a jewel implode by expanding too fast.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I work daily in a variety of collaborative settings with many different groups. I work in numerous positions from leadership roles to general member.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
I have minors in Business Administrations and Economics.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
Also being a Chemical Engineer I understand the manufacturing process associated with our business (batch process, fermentation, scale-up, etc.)

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I am an avid beer drinker and taster! I am a lifetime member, but was a bit late to the cause. The people who founded the coop had the foresight to establish a structure that took off in popularity. I would like to help carry the philosophy of the founders forward.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
I am a fiscal conservative and will focus on reducing and retiring the debt. One of my clear memories is the lessons from the ski club. In that case the boards elected made a number of decisions that essentially ended the club. The decisions were all related to overextending the debt position in a small town that was unlikely to have an expanding customer base.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
I would like to see the club making great beer! We need to make substantial progress reducing the debt of the club. I am opposed to any expansions that put the coop into a poor fiscal position. We really have to maintain a low debt and cash rich position.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).

Why do you want to serve on the Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op Board?

I would like to work with other Board members to insure a sound financial footing for the future of the coop. see the CoOp continue to thrive and would like to involve additional members in the effort.
How do your personal values and choices reflect the values of Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op?
The cooperative movement in England in the 1800's was rooted in the unfair distribution of wealth and the inability of the common man to improve their situation. I espouse the motto "Labor and Wait" and applaud people that are willing to cooperate to achieve a more equitable future. It is my belief that capitalism has its limits to creating an equitable society, and cooperative movements should be fostered to balance the current state of capitalism in the US.
Describe where you would like to see the Co-op in three years and in the long term?
In the relatively short term i would like to see the Co-op on a more sound financial basis. currently, we have only $10K in savings, which is probably less than 1 months operating costs. A relatively small bump in the road (equipment failure, accident, etc) could significantly affect our ability to pay bills and force a loan or worse, which should be avoided. These savings could, in the longer term, be used for early repayment of the member loans that were used to start the business. In five years, I would like to see the CoOp have the money saved to pay off the majority of these loans, and then offer to the members that made loan early payback, OR roll the money over as a downpayment to purchase real estate for a new primary or secondary location. In the very long term, I would like to see more employee ownership, in the true original spirit of cooperatives, and therefore would like to see labor gain a return on their efforts along with capital. The goal of allowing labor to reap a gain on their efforts would also provide for the highest level of service to customers.
Describe an experience you have had working in a collaborative setting (on a board, oversight committee or group).
I have been a member of the Parks and Recreation Board of Los Alamos County for 3 years, and formerly a member of the Solid Waste Board for 4 years. Soon after joining the P&R Board, I volunteered to be the chair of the Open Space Subcommittee. This Subcommittee had been inactive for the previous 4 years, and I recruited 5 new members to staff this subcommittee in the first 6 months of tenure. Our subcommittee spent the next 18 months working to have the County Council adopt a revised Open Space Management Plan. This effort included numerous drafts, rewrites, presentations before council, community meetings and subcommittee meetings and culminated in the adoption of the Plan in May of 2015.
Please describe business knowledge/skills/ability you will bring to the Board.
So far, for the Coop i have served a partial term as a board member. In addition, i have organized and executed several activities to benefit the current BTR, such as: Fabrication and display of the LABC Hydrometer to track contributions. Design and fabrication purchase of the bar backsplash (by Robert Hand) Purchase and installation of the large bench seat and back along the East wall (with Troy Calloway) Fabrication and installation of the bookshelf above the bathroom entrance (with Pete Pittman and others) Planning, purchase, and fabrication of the grain mill (with Pete Pittman) Design, fabrication purchase, framing and installation of the "Founders Plaque Design, fabrication, and assembly of multiple pieces of outdoor furniture (with multiple members) In addition, I have attended multiple board meetings and continue to stay involved. These skills represent the ability to solicit participation from other members, creating a feeling of pride and ownership in the coop.
Please describe any other skills or experiences that directly contribute to the Board that we may not have asked you about.
As an American Society of Mechanical Engineer (ASME) member in 1997, Mark Miller and I lobbied to split from the Albuquerque section and form a Northern NM Section headquartered in Los Alamos. Currently, this section administers a budget of approximately $40,000 per year. Most of that funding goes to promote technical education in the form of scholarships ($40,000 for 2 endowed Los Alamos Employee Scholarships), Science Fair prizes, Robotic League teams, student intern hiring and mentoring, dinner lectures, etc. I am the current Chair of the NNM section, and have been the past Chair, Vice Chair, Activities Chairman, and treasurer. These activities are largely staffed by volunteer members, and I have a significant amount of experience in planning, encouraging and successfully executing member volunteer activities with ASME and other volunteer organizations.
